Question:

Some people say that employers should prioritise experience over formal qualifications when recruiting. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Model Answer (approx. 260 words)

Employers often face a dilemma when deciding whether to prioritise candidates with practical experience or those with formal qualifications. While experience demonstrates applied skills, qualifications signal theoretical knowledge and commitment. I argue that the best hires combine both, though the balance depends on the sector.

Practical experience shows that an applicant can perform job duties immediately, reducing training time. For example, an experienced technician will be comfortable operating machinery and solving common problems, which benefits employers seeking immediate productivity. In rapidly evolving industries, up-to-date practical skills are sometimes more valuable than an older degree.

Conversely, formal qualifications provide a foundation of knowledge and demonstrate the ability to engage with complex concepts. Professions such as healthcare and law require accredited qualifications to ensure safety and competence. Additionally, degrees often teach research methods and critical analysis, which contribute to long-term professional development.

In conclusion, both experience and qualifications have strengths. Employers should consider the nature of the role: practical roles may prioritise experience, while regulated or specialist positions require formal credentials. Candidates who combine study with relevant experience are ideally placed for success.
