How I Improved from 6.5 → 8 Band in 30 Days
Stuck at Band 6.5? I was there too. I needed a Band 7.5 for my visa, but my writing and speaking scores just wouldn't budge. Here is the exact 30-day plan I used to jump to Band 8.
The Diagnosis
First, I had to understand why I was getting 6.5. Usually, it's one of two things:
- Small grammar errors: Articles, prepositions, or singular/plural mistakes.
- Lack of complex structures: Using only simple sentences.
Week 1: Vocabulary & Grammar Overhaul
I stopped doing full tests and focused on input. I learned 50 advanced words (such as 'exacerbate', 'mitigate', 'unprecedented') and practiced using them in sentences. I also revised conditional sentences (If I were...).
Week 2: Writing Structure
I realized my essays lacked flow. I started using linking words more effectively (However, Moreover, Consequently) but not overusing them. I practiced writing just introductions and conclusions to save time.
Week 3: Intense Speaking Practice
I recorded myself answering Part 2 cue cards every single day. I listened to the recordings and cringed—but I noticed my "umms" and pauses. By day 20, I was much more fluent.
Week 4: Mock Tests with Feedack
This was crucial. You cannot improve if you don't know your detailed score. I used AI tools to get instant feedback on my writing and speaking.
