Common Mistakes You Should Not Make
This article highlights frequent pitfalls in IELTS writing and practical ways to fix them.
1. Not answering all parts of the question
Always identify each task requirement in the prompt. Underline keywords and ensure you cover all parts across your paragraphs.
2. Poor paragraphing
Use a clear introduction, two or three body paragraphs and a concise conclusion. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence.
3. Limited vocabulary
Learn collocations and synonyms for common topics (education, environment, technology). Avoid repeating the same words; paraphrase the prompt.
4. Weak cohesion
Use linking devices correctly (however, furthermore, consequently) but avoid unnatural overuse.
5. Grammar mistakes
Focus on subject-verb agreement, tense consistency and punctuation. Practise complex sentences and check after writing.
